Autoimmune Disease State Overview

INOVA STRIVES TO BE IN THE FOREFRONT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TESTS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR DIAGNOSIS OF AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE

The study of autoimmune disease crosses many disciplines including, Rheumatology, Neurology, Gastroenterology or Hepatology to name just a few. Autoimmune disease can involve virtually any cell or organ system. Autoimmune diseases range from the rare and esoteric to relatively common and mainstream diseases like celiac disease and rheumatoid arthritis which affect up to 1% of the population.

Most of Inova’s work centers on the detection of autoantibodies. While autoantibodies can be useful markers of disease, many may be involved in the disease process itself. Most autoantibodies studied appear years prior to the onset of symptoms and autoantibodies usually bind at or near the active sites of autoantigens that are generally biologically important molecules or enzymes. While progress continues to be made in the treatment and management of autoimmune disease, the proper application of this treatment is dependent on accurate and early diagnosis. Serology plays a very important role in the diagnosis of most autoimmune diseases.

The study of autoimmune disease is a young science. It is also an extremely dynamic science with new discoveries coming at a rapid pace. The speed at which new discoveries are converted into practical, robust, laboratory procedures is stunning and gratifying. Inova strives to be in the forefront of development of new tests and technologies that aid in the diagnosis of autoimmune disease.
